What happens after I schedule my first appointment?

Once you set up an appointment, I will send you some paperwork to complete and return to me.  By  filling out the paperwork in advance, you will have time to give thoughtful responses and I will have time to consider your responses.  When we meet for the first time, I will be prepared to listen to you, discuss your responses, and begin to collaborate with you on your nutrition plan.

What will we do at appointments?

When you arrive at my office for the first time, I will greet you in the parking lot so I can show you to my office.  If you haven’t already signed your forms, I will have copies ready for you to sign.  Once the paperwork is taken care of, I will listen to your story and together, we will come up with some ideas to help you reach your goals.  We will make a plan and you can start putting that plan into action.  When you return for a follow-up appointment, we will review what went well for you and what needs more work and adjust the plan accordingly.

Will my health insurance pay for my visits?

Unfortunately, in South Carolina, nutrition services are usually not covered by health insurance because most of the large insurance companies do not recognize dietitian nutritionists as “providers.” Because I am not a provider and do not have a contract with your insurance company, I cannot file for reimbursement.  However, if your insurance plan allows for nutrition services, then your insurance company may reimburse you.  I will give you a “superbill” to file with your insurance company.

May I use my Healthcare Savings Account (HCSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to pay for my visits?

Most likely, yes.  As of this point, I have never had an HCSA or FSA refuse payment.

How much do you charge?

I bill in 15-minute units.  All appointments are set for one hour.  For your first appointment, I leave a little extra time in my schedule in case you need extra time. You will be billed for the additional time should you choose to stay longer than one hour.   For the initial appointment, the 15-minute fee is $35.00.  Expect to pay $140.00, or more, if the appointment runs over one hour.  For follow-up appointments, the 15-minute charge is $30.00.  Expect to pay $120.00, or more, if the appointment runs over one hour.  Billing starts at the time your appointment is scheduled.  You may schedule a shorter follow up appointment and pay only for the time you schedule and use.  Please let me know you want a shorter appointment at the time of scheduling.  Please note all initial appointments are at least one hour.
